So whether you are going to a vision board party or staying home solo, this is a complete guide on how to create a vision board that works by harnessing the Law of Attraction!
So welcome to Vision Board 101, I’m Professor Marissa Zen, and I’m going to show you how to create a vision board that actually works.
I’ve created multiple vision boards throughout my life and I always get what I want, from paying off debt and increasing money luck to moving to Europe and buying a new (100-year old) home.
If you have ever been curious about vision boards, this guide is for you!
A vision board is 50% magic, 50% science, and 100% amazing!
Pay special attention to tip #8 – you need to master this ASAP for your dreams to come true!
What Is A Vision Board?
A vision board is a collection of images, words, quotes, objects, and ideas that help you visualize your goals and achieve your dreams by harnessing the Law of Attraction.
The Law of Attraction allows people to manifest their ideal life. It tells people to focus on abundance rather than looking at what they lack.
A vision board will help you think more about the life you desire on how to get there and encourage you to spend less time dwelling on all the things you don’t have.
In other words, it is a visual representation of a person’s dreams and where they hope their life and goals will take them.
This powerful tool can also be called a dream board or mood board.
The wonderful thing about vision boards is that they are completely artistic and can be totally personalized to you. There aren’t any hard and fast rules about how many words you need to choose or how many photos you have to include when making one.
- If you are inspired by literature, fill up your vision board with your favorite quotes.
- If you are more moved by colors, use paint or crafts to add the shades that energize you when you look at it.
- If you are a minimalist (like me) you can keep your goals very tidy and choose a vision board that doubles as functional home decor to keep things nice and neat.
You will fill this board, journal, or collage with your wishes, dreams, and desires, in order to manifest your ideal life.
Do vision boards actually work?
If used properly, yes vision boards do work!
A vision board uses the Law of Attraction to manifest your goals or dreams and bring them forth into reality.
The Law of Attraction is the belief that we have the ability to attract whatever we are focusing on — believe me, this is not a new concept!
The Law of Attraction has been acknowledged and used since ancient times for everything from mastering meditation techniques to training athletes to learning new skills, such as languages or games (such as chess).
What you think you become. What you feel you attract. What you imagine you create.Buddha
If you focus on positivity and success, you will attract positivity and success, but if you get caught up in negative thought patterns you may draw toxicity and back luck.
When you put your dreams and ideas of where you want your life/business to go in a place you’ll see frequently, you are able to focus your thoughts and energies on it.
This will attract those things to you.

Why You Need A Dream Board
Even if you don’t believe in the Law of Attraction, a vision board can still help you focus on your goals and dreams.
It’s so easy to grow discouraged when you experience setbacks. A vision board keeps you focused on your ultimate end goal.
It reminds you of your why.
A vision board can motivate you to keep working hard when life’s hardships try to distract you and drag you away from your clarity.
Where To Put Your Board
In order for a vision board to keep you focused, you need to put it somewhere you’ll see it every day.
Some people hang up their vision boards in their home office, but if you don’t have a home office, hang it up in your bedroom or bathroom.
Another really popular choice is to take a picture of your vision board and use it as the background on your phone. Since most people take their phones everywhere, it means they always have their vision board with them for inspiration!
Computer desktops or a simple Pinterest board are another easy digital option.
How To Make A Vision Board
Now that you know the power of a vision board, let’s look at how to make your own!
These simple yet powerful vision board ideas and tips will guide you as you create your own DIY vision board.
Set aside time to completely focus on making your board. After all, this is where you will put your hopes, dreams, goals, and inspiration!
#1: Reflect on your dreams and goals
Before you start making the board, you need to decide what it’s going to be about — aka, what are the dreams you are trying to bring forth into reality? What goals will you be working towards achieving?
Here are a few popular vision board categories:
- Career goals
- Money goals
- Family and relationship goals
- Health and fitness goals
- Spirituality and mindfulness goals
- Traveling goals
I personally like to sit down with a pen and paper or my computer and jot my ideas out as they come to me.
Be very clear about what you want, because you need to choose powerful images and items for your vision board that will represent your dreams – if your images feel too vague, they are probably not going to be effective.
#2. Your vision board timeframe
A lot of people make a board at the start of the new year and they don’t touch it until the year is over and they are ready to reflect upon their goals and achievements of the past year before creating a new board.
On the other hand, others will change their board up each quarter, adding, removing, or even completely revamping their mood board.
They like boards that give them the flexibility to adapt their dream board as their goals come true or change (this is when a wall grid vision board or corkboard would be super handy – it’s not easy to change a collage style board like this!)
Are you someone who wants to choose your goals and stick to them for one year or do you like the idea of changing things up 4-6 times each year?
Think about your vision board time frame, then move on to the next step!
#3: Decide what kind of vision board you want to make
The only limit to what kind of vision board you can make is your own imagination!
When you start collecting vision board ideas and brainstorming, don’t think for a second you have to stick to collage-style posterboards — literally, any flat surface can become a vision board — even your computer or smartphone!
- your bedroom wall or door
- your phone or computer background
- the first page of a new bullet journal
- a metal wall grid
- a framed picture that you can make into a collage
Let your intuition and personal space guide you. If you live in a small space, there is no reason you can’t make a digital vision board on your phone or Pinterest!
The vision board that makes you feel happy and inspired is the one that will work best for you.
I love the metal wall grid that I used for my vision board because it’s a hybrid of form and function – part vision board, part storage space, and part wall decor!
#4: Gather Your Supplies
Now for the fun part – making the vision board.
You’ll need to find things that inspire you, energize you, and motivate you when you look at them.
The tools and supplies you need will depend on the type of vision board you are making.
Are you designing a corkboard bulletin board or decorating a foam presentation board?
Here are the key vision board supplies:
- A positive mindset
- A large, flat surface (unless you are using digital)
- Photos, words, quotes, objects, etc that represent your goals
- Glue, clips, or other adhesive
- A printer or printing service
- The drive to take ACTION to achieve your goals!
#5. Find powerful images, quotes, and words
Now, you could just go and start cutting out random images from magazines that appeal to you — but I think there’s a better way!
Instead of spending hours combing through magazines in hopes of finding vision board ideas and special photos that appeal to you, why not simply start with two of the most powerful search engines known to mankind.
Start a Pinterest board or create a new folder on your desktop for your 2021 vision board. Then, run searches on Pinterest or Google and start saving images that appeal to you.
Remember, you want to select awesome images, words, and quotes that inspire you.
Here are some vision board examples of what to search for:
- Be healthy – look for images of delicious and healthy foods, smoothies, fit and toned bodies — images that exude confidence and/or quotes about clean eating and a healthy lifestyle.
- To declutter & organize – search for images of clean and tidy homes, quotes about how good it feels to clear clutter, lovely white kitchen countertops and pantries, or maybe even Marie Kondo if she appeals to you!
- Travel – choose items that represent the places you want to travel to in 2021.
Don’t feel limited to photos and quotes only – you can also choose what I like to call “power objects” from your real life!
A PERSONAL STORY: If you know the story of how I went from a hoarder to a minimalist, you know it all started when my mother died when I was nine from cancer. When I finally decluttered the 30 years of stuff I had been hoarding I did keep a few very special things, one of which was a beautiful fairy card, that read, “May all your dreams come true.” What could be more powerful than my mother’s wish that my dreams could come true? I put that beauty on my vision board!
#6. Create your own images
Do you feel frustrated because you can’t find vision board ideas that represent exactly what you want to achieve?
Don’t get discouraged – instead, roll up your sleeves and create your OWN image!
Vision board supplies that you create yourself are even more powerful since they are infused with extra positive energy and effort!
You can paste together images and words to make a mini-collage, write or draw words or images yourself, or even use graphic design programs.
Since we moved to Berlin, one big goal I have for myself this year is to learn to speak German and I couldn’t find a good image to represent this on my vision board.
So I used PicMonkey to create my own vision board image!
I took a favorite image of myself and quickly added a speech bubble that read, “Ich spreche ausgezeichnet deutsch” or I speak excellent German.
Remember, you want to view and think of your goals as if they already are a reality – this is a powerful Law of Attraction method!

#7. Put It Together (the Right Way)
Now you are ready to create your vision board!
Set aside uninterrupted time to focus completely on creating your masterpiece. This isn’t a joke – this is going to help you actualize and attain your dreams!
Find a place where you can craft and pour your heart out. If you love music, turn on your favorite playlist that helps you concentrate and tap into your heart’s deepest desires.
There aren’t design rules for this part.
This is completely up to you. This board represents your inner dreams, so feel free to make it as colorful and creative as you want OR if order and straight lines make more sense to you, do it that way.
The most important thing is to make the entire board all at once, without taking breaks or getting distracted. Turn off notifications and turn up the music.
Don’t stop until the vision board is done!
#8. Remove Your “Mental Blocks”
A word of warning — be careful to keep negative images and ideas off of your mood board (and out of your mind).
There are a few important principles of the Law of Attraction that are often forgotten that can stop you from manifesting your dreams.
1. The Law of Attraction doesn’t recognize negation
LOA does not recognize negation.
Therefore, “I don’t want to be poor anymore” becomes “I want to be poor” and “I don’t want to fight with my boyfriend anymore” would become “I want to fight with my boyfriend.“
Choose positive images and quotes and use cheerful self-talk when trying to manifest change in your life, so that you start attracting those things, instead of their opposite.
2. Your energy will flow to the thing you are concentrating upon
Likewise saying, “I want to get out of debt” focuses your energy on the debt, when what you really should be doing is focusing on the positive outcome of being out of debt.
Reframe your words and ideas to say, instead, “My wealth is growing. Cash and opportunities to increase my income flow to me each day“.
3. Fear, disbelief, and negativity will block your progress
In order for the Law of Attraction to work, you need to really believe in your goals – not just that they will come to be but that they are already your present reality.
To bring anything into your life, imagine that it’s already there.Richard Bach
This takes some practice but becomes second nature when you get used to this type of self-talk.
Positive self-talk examples:
- WRONG: I want to lose weight.
- RIGHT: I naturally choose healthy foods, stop eating when I am full, and enjoy exercising three times a week.
- WRONG: I never have enough money – I can’t seem to save!
- RIGHT: I find it easy to save money and enjoy budgeting.
Learning to speak a new language:
- WRONG: I want to learn to speak German.
- RIGHT: I speak excellent German.
#9. Put Your Board in a Visible Location
After your vision board is complete, hang it up somewhere you will see it regularly.
This vision board is a representation of all the good things that you want to attract to your life and achieve. In order to keep your thoughts positive and focused on your goals, you need to be able to see your vision board.
If there isn’t a place you can find to hang it up, take a picture of it and use it as your lock screen on your phone. Use it as the desktop wallpaper on your computer.
Keep the images accessible so they can adjust your focus when it strays or falters.
#10. Take action to achieve your goals
A vision board is completely USELESS if you just sit around and wait for your dreams to come true – you need to put forth effort and energy if you want your vision board to work.
Sure, you could put a picture of a million dollars on your board, sit back, and wait for the money to randomly start rolling in, but…
Spoiler: it won’t.
I’m sorry to say the Law of Attraction doesn’t work like that.
The Law of Attraction respects action – it recognizes you putting effort and energy into making what you want to happen, actually happen.
If you want to find your soulmate, don’t just sit back and expect one to fall into your lap. You can put effort into making yourself feel beautiful with self-care, join dating apps, participate in classes or other social events where you can meet like-minded people, etc.
